IC693ALG221
4. Product Introduction
This unit provides eight isolated analog output channels for Series 90-30 PLCs, doubling the channel count of the 4-channel ALG220. Each channel independently drives field devices through optical isolation, with per-channel configurability as either 0-10VDC voltage or 4-20mA current outputs. The 12-bit DACs deliver ±0.25% accuracy across all channels.
The advantage is density and isolation in a single card. You get double the output capacity without doubling rack slots, and channel-to-channel isolation eliminates ground reference conflicts when driving devices from different power sources or ground potentials. This is the right choice when you need more analog outputs but rack space is limited.
5. QA & Testing SOP
Our QC process for this 8-channel module follows a strict 5-step verification:
1. Incoming Inspection: We verify part numbers against GE/Emerson datasheets and examine for physical damage—corrosion, bent pins, counterfeit markings, or thermal damage. We trace lot codes to confirm manufacturing origin.
2. Live Testing: The unit powers up in a Series 90-30 test rack. We load all 8 channels simultaneously at 0%, 50%, and 100% output levels. A Fluke 87V multimeter verifies voltage outputs within ±0.25% and current outputs within ±0.25%. All 8 channels execute together for 4 hours under full load.
3. Electrical Testing: Insulation resistance exceeds 10MΩ between adjacent channels and backplane (measured at 500VDC). We verify continuity on all backplane pins and check for short circuits between channels.
4. Firmware/Config Backup: We record the exact firmware version. Photo documentation captures any DIP switch positions or jumper configurations before testing begins.
5. Final QC & Packaging: The module passes final visual inspection, receives a QC pass tag, and ships in anti-static packaging. Each unit includes a test report documenting measured values for all 8 output points.
6. Installation Pitfalls & Guide
❗ Forgetting External 24VDC for Current Outputs
Current outputs (4-20mA) require external 24VDC power. With 8 channels potentially drawing up to 160mA total, ensure your external 24VDC supply has adequate headroom. Without external power, current outputs won’t drive.
❗ Exceeding Total Current Draw on 24VDC
Eight channels at 20mA each draw 160mA maximum from external 24VDC. Verify your external supply can handle this load plus 20-30% margin. An undersized supply causes voltage sag and output inaccuracy.
❗ Mixing Isolated Channel Commons
Each of the 8 channels is isolated. Tying commons together creates ground loops. Use separate commons per channel unless you’ve verified all 8 field devices share exactly the same ground reference.
❗ Skipping Channel-by-Channel Verification
With 8 channels, it’s tempting to spot-check only a few. Verify each channel individually with a multimeter at minimum, mid-scale, and maximum. One bad channel can cripple your process.
❗ Overlooking Backplane Power Increase
This unit draws 350mA @ +5VDC—75mA more than the 4-channel ALG220. If you’re replacing a 4-channel module, verify your rack power supply has adequate headroom for the extra current draw.
4-Step Replacement Guide:
- Pre-install: Document channel configuration (voltage vs. current per channel) and photograph the terminal block wiring.
- Removal: Power down the rack. Disconnect the terminal block. Remove the failed module.
- Install: Install the replacement module. Reconnect the terminal block.
- Power-on Test: Apply power. Verify each of the 8 channels outputs the correct value using a multimeter. Check LED indicators illuminate above minimum output thresholds.

7. FAQ
Q: Does this module support hot-swapping?
A: No. This unit is not rated for hot-swap. Removing it with power applied risks backplane communication faults and potential module damage. Always power down the rack before replacement.
Q: Can I mix 0-10V and 4-20mA outputs on the same module?
A: Yes, per-channel configurability allows mixing across all 8 channels. However, if any channel is configured for 4-20mA, you must connect external 24VDC power. Voltage outputs don’t require external power, but current outputs do.
Q: What happens if a current loop opens (wire breaks)?
A: The live zero (4mA floor) provides fault detection. Current drops below 4mA, and the field device can detect an open circuit. Many control valves drive to a safe position when input falls below 4mA. Implement PLC logic to monitor for below-4mA conditions across all 8 channels.
Q: Is this module still manufactured?
A: The Series 90-30 platform is mature. While GE/Emerson may still offer limited support, most available units are New Surplus or refurbished stock. Verify firmware compatibility with your existing modules before installation.
Q: Will this module work in a Series 90-70 rack?
A: No. This unit is designed specifically for Series 90-30 backplanes. Mechanical and electrical interfaces differ between Series 90-30 and 90-70. You need Series 90-70 specific modules (IC697ALGxxx series) for 90-70 racks.
Q: Does the K suffix indicate different specifications?
A: No. The K suffix is a manufacturing variant identifier and does not affect electrical specifications. All specifications—8 channels, 12-bit resolution, ±0.25% accuracy, isolation—are identical to the base ALG221. The K variant is fully interchangeable with the base model for all applications.
Q: Can I replace a 4-channel ALG220K with this 8-channel ALG221K?
A: Yes, electrically they’re compatible. However, this unit draws 350mA vs. ALG220K’s 200mA backplane current. Verify your power supply has adequate headroom. You’ll also need to reconfigure the PLC program to address 8 channels instead of 4. Update your I/O mapping accordingly.
