Field Application & Problem Solved
In a paper-mill DC2000 winder the field winding is fed from a single-phase SCR bridge. This card sits between the SDCC and the bridge: it takes the 5 V logic fire pulse, boosts it to ±15 V at 10 A, and shoves it through the SCR gate. When a lightning hit blows the on-board varistor you lose one channel, swap the card in two minutes, and you’re back to base speed—no download, no re-cal. Because it’s “NRX” configured, the bridge cannot reverse; you get simple, reliable field control without extra contactors. Every DC drive cabinet keeps a spare taped to the door because without gate pulses the motor runs away.

Installation & Maintenance Pitfalls (Expert Tips)
Jumpers define the personality
Factory default is 60° phase retard. If your field supply runs 120° soft-start and you forget JP3, the bridge fires early, pulls 200 A, and pops the mains fuse. Match the jumper legend inside the cabinet before you land wires.

Fuses are gate-specific
Use only 250 V fast-blow ceramics. A 3 A slow-blow survives long enough to cook the copper trace—then you’re buying a whole new board. Stock the correct fuse or you’ll repeat the call-out.

10-pin connector key is soft plastic
Reverse the plug and you ram +15 V into the 5 V logic pin—blown SDCC UART. Line up the triangle mark with the silk-screen; tug-test before power-on.

Varistor runs warm—let it cool
The 20 mm MOV sits across the 120 V input. After a surge it’s hot and conductive; swap the card before you meter or you’ll read a false short.

Technical Deep Dive & Overview
Internally the card is a single-channel opto-isolated gate driver. An HCPL-4504 coupler converts the 5 V CMOS edge to 15 V, dumps it into a push-pull stage, and exits through the bayonet lead. Because there is no processor, you can hot-swap with the field bridge powered—pull the old card, move the two gate leads, snap the 10-pin connector, and the SDCC re-acquires gate timing inside 50 ms. Non-reversing logic is hard-wired: the JP5 “NRX” jumper blocks reverse-fire pulses, giving you a simple, bullet-proof field supply for DC motors and generators
