Field Application & Problem Solved
In the field, the biggest pain is getting an old INFI-90 rack to talk to a modern PC. INICT01 is the serial bridge—plugs into the backplane, spits out RS-232 at 19.2 k, and lets your HMI/SCADA pull live data without a $2 000 gateway box. You’ll typically find it bolted to the side of turbine panels, flare skids, or any 90-series rack where an engineer still wants to use Wonderware or a custom VB app. Its main value: it off-loads the CPU from bit-banging serial and gives you a standard DB-9 you can cable directly to a COM port or USB-serial dongle.

Installation & Maintenance Pitfalls (Expert Tips)
Baud DIP switches lie – Set them before you insert the card. If you change them live, the module won’t switch until the next rack power-cycle.
DB-9 pin-out trap – Pin 2 TX, Pin 3 RX, Pin 5 GND. If your PC cable is null-modem, you’ll swap TX/RX and get silence—meter the cable first.
Backplane power dip – Card runs on +5 V 4 A. If your rack supply sags below 4.8 V, the module resets and you’ll see garbage on the terminal. Check +5 V under load.
NVRAM battery – No battery, but if you lose +5 V you lose the baud-rate DIP setting. Write it on a label taped to the card.
Termination resistor – RS-232 doesn’t need one, but if you run RS-485 out of a converter, terminate 120 Ω at the far end or you’ll chase ghosts.

Technical Deep Dive & Overview
INICT01 is a passive serial gateway—no CPU onboard. It grabs a 512-byte buffer from INFI-Net every 100 ms and shoves it out the DB-9 at the selected baud. Inside is a 68000-family UART, 256 kB ROM for firmware, and 80 kB NVRAM for buffer scratch. The card keys itself into the backplane; don’t force it or you’ll break the plastic lock. Lose +5 V and the whole card goes dark—tie it to the same UPS feeding the CPU.
